News

Since the Berry Family acquired Saddleback in 2003, significant improvements have been made to increase the value of the Saddleback experience. Major projects include a 60% increase in terrain, improvements to chairlifts, a family and beginner area, base lodge and increased snowmaking.

In 2007, the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) approved Saddleback's 10-year plan for the mountain. Plans include a four-season resort village and on-mountain lodging with the Rock Pond, South Branch and Mountain Brook condominiums. Progress continues with our most recent improvements below:

Kennebago Quad Chairlift

A Dopplemayr quad chairlift has replaced the Kennebago T-bar and services 15 trails and glades. The new chair provides easy and faster access to the spectacular high-elevation advanced terrain with incredible views of the lakes and Western Maine Mountains.

We also have a new yurt at the base of the Kennebago Quad lift, called Kennebago Station, where skiers and riders can warm up and refuel with soups, sandwiches, and drinks, and it is equipped with heat, power and composting toilets. A yurt has a very low impact on the environment and provides a cozy place to relax on the Mountain.

Advanced Skiing Area

Saddleback is home to one of the largest advanced skiing areas in the east. Set aside from the other trails, our challenging terrain features 16 advanced trails and glades with many new black and double black diamond trails that are now easily accessible via the new Kennebago Quad Chairlift.

Intermediates Can Ski from the Summit

The new quad chairlift allows intermediate skiers the opportunity to ski from the summit. With recent enhancements to the mountain, beginners can enjoy the panoramic views and ski along the 4,120 ft. ridge among rime-frosted conifers before descending to the base using the 3.1 mile America and Hudson Highway trails. Intermediates can ski Tri-Color and Green Weaver, a one mile loop, back to the Kennebago Chair.

New Trails

Last season, Black Beauty, Frost Bite and Artula (black diamond) were all added off the new Kennebago Quad Chair. In addition, the Hornberg trail (green circle) is a new, easier trail in the South Branch beginner/family area that provides access to ski-in/ski-out trails from the South Branch and Mountain Brook condominiums. This season, we added Family Secret, our new double black diamond trail, along with a 44 acre glade, Casablanca.

In the summer and fall of 2009, Saddleback's crew worked to create the new Casablanca glade.

More Grooming

This season, two new Pisten Bully Snow Groomers were added to the mountain’s arsenal of machines to make the Saddleback snow surface better than ever!

Rental and Retail Shops

Saddleback operates a full-service rental shop and retail store in the base lodge. The rental shop offers numerous rental skis, boards, boots, bindings and poles. The retail shop is your source for clothing and accessories for all your Mountain needs.

Saddleback Development Continues

In the Spring of 2009, Saddleback Realty was launched as a full service brokerage firm specializing in on mountain and selective off mountain properties.

Last summer a majority of the development on the mountain was focused on improving ski-in and ski-out capability, with expansion in the Magalloway, Rock Pond II, and Mountain Brook developments.

The second 12-Unit South Branch building is scheduled to be completed fall of 2010, providing 4 new 2-Bedroom Units and 4 new 1-Bedroom units as well as 4 Penthouse suites. Reserve yours today, already 2 Penthouse suites are under contract.
